These motion graphics are displayed through electronic media technology, (the television for example). However some motion graphics can be displayed using manual powered technology such as a flip book or zoetrope.
The term motion graphics is used to distinguish between still graphics and graphics with a transforming image over time. It originated with video editing in computing to keep up to date with newer technology.
Computers are capable of calculating and randomizing changes in imagery to create the illusion of motion and transformation.
Elements of a motion graphic can be animated in various means (this of course depends on the capability of the software). These elements are often in the form of art, text, video clips and photo’s. A type of software that can be used to create motion graphics is Adobe After Effects.
The most popular form on animation is keyframing. This is where properties of an object can be specified at certain points in a series of keyframes. A programme such as Lightwave takes a graphic that has been designed and by selecting key angle, it will then fill in the gaps making a seamless transition.
Compositing is the combining of visual elements from separate sources into single images, often to create the illusion that all those elements are parts of the same scene. All compositing involves the replacement of selected parts of an image with other material, usually, but not always, from another image. In television studios, blue or green screens may back news-readers to allow the compositing of stories behind them, before being switched to full-screen display. A similar process is also used to incorporate video into a digitally produced motion graphic.
Motion graphics are used in the media for things such as:
Title/credit sequences: In a motion picture, television program or video game, the opening credits are shown at the very beginning and list the most important members who were involved in the production. They may have accompanying music to them. The correct term for them is a title sequence, such as in James Bond and The Pink Panther.
The common opening credits order, is as follows:
Name of studio, production company, producer, starring, title, featuring, casting, music, production design, editor, director of photography, producer, based on, story by, written by, and directed by.
This is a title sequence for Catch Me If You Can.
In the Jeremy Kyle opening credits their is a small flash of light which works its way up each letter in the name of the show - this is done to catch and keep the viewers attention on each letter of the word. When the opening credits are about to finish, this light then flashes, and the show starts. The whole clip is all ver sharp and detailed and after much scrutiny there would be next to no faults with the piece.
In my opinion, to make this better I would use a few more advanced techniques, such as rotation because the more different things that are going on are bound to attract the viewers attention more. I could do this by using the rotation tool in Adobe After Effects.

In the James Bond interactive menu rotation is used when the barrel of the gun suddenly zooms forward, and the audience see a blade like spiral rotating inside it.
No distortion is used and everything is sharp, clear and detailed therefore there is no blurring. The motion graphic reminded me of work I have created on illustrator.
If I had to make this piece better, I would use more advanced techniques to make it more interesting for the viewer to watch, even if that was just adding more rotation which has already been included a little. I would do this in Adobe After Effects. Other than that, I wouldn’t change or add anything with this interactive menu.

Interactive Menus:
This is an interactive Menu for James Bond - Die Another Day. Is what is used on a DVD before you actually ‘press play’ and watch it. It gives you a few options which the producers have added, for example ‘deleted scenes’ or ‘language selection.’ Alongside this however, there is usually a motion graphic which would grab and keep your attention. The James bond example I have given consists of a chrome and black colour scheme with the focus on ‘007’ and the things you associate with him, for instance guns and Bond Girls.

Web Banners: This is a form of advertising on the internet, and is delivered by an ad server. This type of advertising includes embedding an advertisement into a web page. They can be large banners, up to 486 x 60 pixels, or inconspicuous buttons. The content of the ad can rage from a simple piece of text, to a background image, to a short movie.
Ident: (Station Identification/channel ID) This is the practice of radio or television stations identifying themselves on air. This is usually done through a call sign or brand name. Stations usually play the ident at the start, halfway through, or during intervals of the presentation or TV program.
Most television channels will use their channel number during an Ident, as it is easily understood by the viewers. Usually, there will be an announcer speaking over the top of the clip introducing the upcoming programme.
This is an example of a Channel 5 ident.
Each channel has its own brand ideology and have factors that although are ever changing, over the years will remain the same/similar. Channel 5 have always used the font Cambria, whether they use the word ‘five’ or the number ‘5.’
The ident that I analyzed was one made for E4 by a company named ‘Precursor’’ who are a multi disciplinary design company. This ident uses very bright eye catching colours with the trademark colour of purple playing a big part. The graphic is of a beach with 3 beach huts in the background each with a different in them (In one, a television, in another, a deck chair, and in the third, hairdressing seats.) This ident uses lots of movement, again this is to entertain and attract the viewers. Rotation is also used in this ident, in the form of sharks turning around in the sand. There is no blurring or distortion in the clip which is because E4 are going for a clean crisp look. The resolution is 1081i (HDTV).
Sting: A sting is usually a short animated video sequence that forms either a company logo graphic or image. The length of a sting will vary but it is typically around 3 to 15 seconds.
The purpose of a sting is to reflect the ideas of a company in a stylish and eye-catching way. It is used to grab the attention of an audience in a small amount of time. A sting sequence usually involves forming, or revealing a logo. However the way that this is done, is down to the company itself. Along with the imagery, a sting will normally incorporate sound whether that be music or sound effects. Sound is used to engage the audience even more, and also helps to create a more professional feel.
This is the Disney Channel 'Chrome Blobs' Sting.
The sting that I analyzed was made for The Disney Channel. It is a very short sting at 4 seconds long. It is aimed at pre-teens and teenagers aged 9-14, therefore the shorter and simpler it is, the better. It starts of which a chrome background and 3 silver ‘blobs’ traveling to meet each other to form the iconic Disney logo (which is easily recognizable to people of any age as the head of Mickey Mouse). When looking closely at the image, there seems to be a reflected image of a house in the blobs. Once the shape has formed, the words Disney Channel and ‘www.disneychannel.de’ below them. This is good as there isn’t a lot of reading for children to do, and the web address is simple enough to remember. Movement is used when the chrome blobs move towards each other to form the iconic shot. When they have done so, they wobble a little then become still in the form of a ‘Mickey Mouse’ head. The main colour used in this sting is a silver chrome. However it is reflective and eye-catching. There is no blur used in this video as the whole clip is very sharp and focussed. The chrome blobs distort when they are moving towards each other, and then again when they become one. The Video format used is PAL which is the UK standard. The sting isn’t as clear as it would usually be, due to the fact that it has been uploaded to YouTube and therefore lost some of its original quality. The reason for the loss of quality in the video is down to the codec used which is H.261 this means that generally it is not that high in quality, especially on lower end machines.
Idents and Stings may look quite similar, however they both have different purposes. The purpose of an ident is to remind the audience of the channel that they are watching, and make them feel comfortable and at home. For example, E4. Whereas a sting will attract an audience into watching the channel, or keep them there. Also, an ident tends to be longer than a sting as it will give more information about the channel, whereas if you are seeing a sting, it will be sharp and fast and usually loud (in sound or colour) to attract a new audience.
An advantage of an ident is that it is more effective in attracting and keeping an audience as it is welcoming, and you instantly recognize and familiarize yourself with it, making it seem as though this ident was made for you. An example of this would be how the BBC always use the colour in their idents. Since 1996 when the new BBC logo was created, this colour has been continuously used. As the colour red is bright and vibrant, it is eye-catching therefore attracting more viewers.
A disadvantage of an ident is that if you’re a fan of the channel and you visit it quite a lot, the ident could become tiresome and repetitive, and in my opinion, may in the end force you to change the channel as you’re sick of seeing it played. However this is why most companies have many different idents. The also rebrand often, but keep the same ideology of the ident. This could be resolved in the case of the red BBC idents, by perhaps changing them up a little so more colours/themes are incorporated , but the colour red could still be used dominantly.
My James Bond example was running on 360p which is the lowest format you can play videos on using Youtube (the highest being 1080p). An advantage of this, is that the audience can load the video quickly with little or no lag. However a disadvantage is that the video will be viewed with a low resolution and therefore important detail could be lost in translation. this is therefore not a good resolution for the purpose of this article.
Screen Ratio: The aspect ratio of an image describes the proportional relationship between its width and its height. HDTV's have an aspect ratio of 16x9. A traditional analog TV has a screen aspect ratio of 4x3, which means that for every 4 units in horizontal screen width, there are 3 units of vertical screen height. It is commonly expressed as two numbers separated by a colon.
The E4 ident I looked at was originally made for a screen ratio of 16:9 and I also watched it in this ratio. The Pros of this are, you will basically get a bigger picture without having to watch something shrunk to fit a smaller screen size. The cons of this screen size is that 16:9 isn't the only screen format, therefore not all video format will fit this frame.
The Jeremy Kyle opening credits I analyzed were made for a 16:9 screen, and therefore the same pro’s and cons will apply.

Resolution: The display resolution of a digital television, computer monitors or display device is the number of distinct pixels in each dimension that can be displayed. The sharpness of the image on a display depends on the resolution and the size of the monitor. The same pixel resolution will be sharper on a smaller monitor and gradually lose sharpness on larger monitors because the same number of pixels are being spread out over a larger number of inches.
Frame Rate: Frame rate (also known as frame frequency) is the frequency (rate) at which an imaging device produces unique consecutive images called frames. The term applies equally well to film and video cameras, computer graphics, and motion capture systems. Frame rate is most often expressed in frames per second (FPS) and is also expressed in progressive scan monitors as hertz.
Frame rates are used in synchronizing audio and pictures.
In television and motion pictures, the frame rates are standardized by the society of Motion Picture and Television Editors (SMPTE). The SMPTE Time Code frame rates of 24, 25 &30 frames per second are common.
The most professional frame rate being 24 per second for motion pictures, and 30 frame rates per second for television.
Compression: Compression is minimizing the size in bytes of a graphics file without degrading the quality of the image to an unacceptable level. The reduction in file size allows more images to be stored in a given amount of disk or memory space. It also reduces the time required for images to be sent over the Internet or downloaded from Web pages. Examples of compressed media formats are: JPEG images, MP3 audio and MPEG video files.
I have created this E4 sting and I am going to be displaying my E6 logo using YouTube. This means that is will be accessible to a very large amount of people, as YouTube is one of the biggest media sources available to audiences these days. A disadvantage of using YouTube would be the quality of the video. The higher the video format, the longer the video will take to load and then it may play with some lag.
This means the following in terms of the technical aspects:
Video Format: On YouTube you can choose from 5 different video qualities. The most popular being 360p which is what I will have my video playing in. The advantage of this is that everyone can watch it in reasonably good quality, as it is not HD. A disadvantage of this is that if someone does want to view it in a better quality, it may take longer to load and there will be some lag with the video.
Screen Ratio: The screen ratio i have chosen for my video is 16:9 as this is the most popular amongst the audience. Advantages of this are that more people can view it in the chosen ratio as more people have 16:9 screens than others. A disadvantage is that if someone does want to view the video in a different size, some of the original quality will be lost.
Resolution: The resolution will be high, therefore no matter what screen size the video is played on, it will be of good quality.
Frame Rate: My sting will be 24 frame rates per second as this is the most professional for the type of video I have made.
Compression: I will save my video as an MPEG, this will ensure that the quality of the file is not ruined, whilst at the same time not taking up unnecessary space or time to load/download.
